Vet prescribing something different? Is it ringworm / fungus or something else? How long for it to clear?
This started in January. We took in our fawn color Pug because she had a small round black spot on top of her paw and a semi-circular black spot on her hind leg - she also had a red crusty splotch on the inside of the same hind leg about the size of a half dollar. Vet took hairs for ringworm test and said to bathe her in Malaseb Shampoo twice a week and use Clotrimazole 1%. Didn’t help and Vet couldn’t say for sure it was or wasn’t ringworm - sample didn’t turn but grew fungus? Vet gave us Clavamox 62.5 mg twice a day plus continue with the other stuff. Still hasn’t cleared up - Vet is now prescribing Ketoconazole 200 mg Tabs 1/2 tab a day and Miconazole NIT cream 2% instead of the Clotrimazole 1% cream. But we still bathe her and give her the rest of the Clavamox pills until they’re gone. Does it sound like ringworm? or something else? How long will it take ringworm to clear up? It hasn’t gotten any better or worse. It’s still the same as it was when we started.
FUZZY-WUZZY WUZA NEWF - I’m sorry, but what can I ask? They told me they thought it was ringworm and pulled some hairs. I called them three times while waiting on the diagnoses and all they could say was it never turned but developed fungus. They put her on some other treatment and still said they thought it was ringworm and to try this new course of treatment. I called again and they still say they think it’s ringworm and to try this new course of treatment and then bring her back in after 4 weeks. What else should I ask the vet? I keep calling and they keep telling me they think it’s ringworm but it never turned.
Thank you for the info on that new pill - I’ll wait on that and just do the 4x a day anti-fungal cream with the 3x a week bath. I didn’t know all the side effects that pill had. Thank you for alerting me - I looked it up on-line.
Thank you for the suggestion … I am going to wait on the pill and do the 4x a day anti-fungal with the 3x a week bath. Hopefully, it will clear up.
CAT S and shauna - Thank you … I had no idea ringworm took so long to clear up. I guess I thought it should be gone by now. I’ve been watching our little male Pug and so far, he’s ok … but he has been getting the same bath she does. He gets his bath just before she gets hers. The vet made that suggestion since they’re always together.

Ringworm can be very difficult to get rid of. Sometimes takes months so carry on with the treatment. Did he do a black light test? There are different types of ringworm and not all of them show up under black light.
I can’t remember right now what we use for it but if it comes back to me I’ll update but the ketoconazole and Miconazole should help
ringworm can take a while to clear up, but you should see some notable progress. this site lists home remedies to pet ailments. enter the animal’s symptoms and the site will list home remedies or id the problem and tell you to see a vet. it will also tell you what the vet’s recommendation and trtmt will probably be. hope this helps.
for some reason, yahoo is having one of its seizures and won’t let me enter an http address google this to find the page. you will have to look at the links to find the home remedies. google: home remedies + "the pounce"
I would never give the Ketaconazole for ringworm…too many side effects with the liver to make it worth it.
Ringworm is a fungus. It goes away with topical application of an anti-fungal alone…no oral meds needed!!!
You need to get better information from your vet so you know what your dog has!!!!
I think you should take your dogs to a different Vet. Get a second opinion. Usually for ring worm they turn off the light and run a black light over top the area. Demodetic mange and other skin issues they do a scraping of the skin. Ringworm is contagious even to humans. Does anyone else have it? If no I would say it is something else.
If it were my dog, I would just use the miconazole and if that didn’t work, I would turn to tolnaftate. That’s just me though.
It takes a while to clear up ringworm. If it seems that it gets infected then clavamox would help, but if not then there’s no reason to use it.
