Vaginal Douches Can Be Dangerous

The chemicals in vaginal douches may irritate your vagina and change the normal balance of good bacteria. Douching also can spread an infection from your vagina or cervix up into the uterus, increasing your risk of getting pelvic inflammatory disease (also called PID). PID is a painful infection of the fallopian tubes that can cause you to be unable to get pregnant. Douching is not necessary to keep your body clean. Odors usually come from outside the vagina. Keeping this area clean with gentle soap and water can prevent odors.

Most people think of fungal yeast infections or Candida albicans (also known as Thrush and Balanitis) as a female issue, however, men frequently develop the condition. Candida in men occurs in the groin area; it can cause soreness, itching, and redness of the head of the penis, scrotum, and foreskin. Often times, small white spots on the penis, burning sensations during intercourse, and transient rashes may identify the ailment. Due to the fact that Candida thrives in warm, sweaty, and irritated skin, uncircumcised men are actually more likely to develop Candida. In some cases, the foreskin even swells and cracks due to the yeast allergy. In addition, not only does, the fungal yeast thrive on the high sugar content found in men with diabetes, it can also result as an allergic reaction to perfumes, dyes, soaps, and shower gels.

The most common symptoms are itching and the feeling of irritation in the vaginal area; redness or swelling of the vulva; a white, thick, unpleasant discharge which looks similar to cottage cheese and which has no scent, although sometimes it could smell like yeast; the feeling of burning whenever urinating or having sex.

There is a proven connection between systemic yeast infection and chronic fatigue syndrome. Candidiasis is also responsible for skin infections and causes chronic vaginal yeast infections.

Yeast are normally found in the human body, but it becomes abnormal if it overgrows on a certain parts where it should not even be there. Most women experience yeast infection in their life as Candida albicans can be found on the vagina due to over productionof yeast. In pregnant mothers, the use of antibiotics and diabetes can be a cause of candida infection.

An abundance of candida may also cause vaginitis, commonly known as a yeast infection. Ordinary symptoms are vaginal itching, a white discharge, sensitive skin at the vaginal opening and pain during urination or intercourse. This condition is especially common in women who are pregnant or taking antibiotics. Women using contraceptives with a high estrogen level are also more susceptible to yeast infections. Because the same fungus that causes vaginal yeast infections is responsible for thrush, it may also be spread through oral sex.

Avoiding a yeast infection is about controlling the environment around the body so that it is able to stay dry. Avoid douching and using feminine products like wipes or sprays. Avoid bubble baths and soaking in soapy water as it can alter the ph in the vagina. If you wear tight clothes with nylon pantyhose or other similar non-breathable materials, try alternating them with loose fitting clothing and cotton underwear. Cotton is a more breathable fabric and will allow the body to stay drier. If you go swimming or participate in strenuous activities that involve heavy perspiration, it is important to change into dry clothes as soon as possible. During sexual intercourse, use a condom for extra protection and also to avoid spreading a yeast infection to your partner.
