Vaginal irritation alone may not necessarily be indicative of a yeast infection. Vaginal irritation is also caused by the use of products such as perfumed soaps, bubble baths, douches, feminine hygiene sprays, spermicides, and vaginal deodorants. A vaginal discharge can sometimes occur in between a woman's menstruation periods, but if the discharge is not accompanied by itchiness, then it is unlikely to indicate a case of Candidiasis. Candida infections in infants and adults may become visible in different ways; oral Candidiasis (or thrush) is exhibited by thick, white patches on top of a red base and may appear on any area inside the mouth. Bleeding on the underlying tissue occurs if these white patches are wiped away. Without the white coating this infection makes the tongue appear to be red in color. Oral thrush is painful and can contribute to eating disorders. Research studies have shown that the yeast population in mice will skyrocket (and become infectious), if the mice are fed a high-sugar diet. The same thing happens in humans. Unfortunately, many people the Western world eat too much refined sugar and simple carbohydrates. This poor dietary choice has become a major factor in the increase in obesity and diabetes, and can increase the chances of yeast infections, too. The common culprit here is Candida albicans. Yeast is present in everyone and lives in harmony along with many other microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract. However, when there's candida overgrowth, it may cause problems such as oral thrush (white coating under the tongue), bloating, indigestion, lethargy, rectal itching, yeast infection of the skin and frequent bladder infections. Thrush, also known as Candidiasis, is a fungus found in the mouth, genitalia areas, digestive tract and skin. In healthy people, the production of “friendly” bacteria in the system prevents the fungus from causing disease. However, weakened or damaged immune systems may result in the dangerous growth of the ailment-causing fungus. In addition, certain prescription drugs may offset the balance of natural organisms in the body. Such drugs include the extended use of: antibiotics, chemotherapy, AIDS/HIV treatments, antihistamines, steroids and oral contraceptives with a high estrogen content. Some people believe that candida infection causes, or at least contributes to, fibromyalgia. Dr. William Crook, MD, originally proposed the concept of candidiasis as a contributing factor to a number of difficult-to-diagnose disorders. There is still some controversy about Dr. Crook’s work, but more people are beginning to agree that candida may have a role in fibromyalgia and other illnesses.
