What to do for an infection on uncircumsized penis?
My 6 year old son is not circumsized, and has never had any previous problems, but yesterday when giving him a bath my husband noticed that the tip of his penis is very red. What should we do to help clear the infection? We obviously already reiterated the need to keep it clean to him, and showed him how again, but I don’t know how long it is supposed to take to clear up. Any experience with this?
If his foreskin can be retracted all the way, then do that and clean underneathe with water and mild soap, then make sure you dry the area with a towel. If his foreskin can’t be retracted yet then leave it alone, don’t force it back. If he can, tell him to retract his foreskin when he pees, if not, leave it alone. Do note that if you wash or use strong soap the area too much that’ll cause redness and irritation; once or twice a day is enough. Furthermore, some detergents can cause irritation on sensitive skins.
There are also antibiotic or antifungal creams you can try on the area, but you may want to clear it with his doctor first. If this doesn’t improve things in a week, take him to his doctor. Your son may need to take oral antibiotic medication for a couple weeks too.
All in all if he’s not in any pain the above should be fine. If his doctor tries to suggest a circumcision, you may want to push for alternatives (and there are many) as to get circumcised for something like this is quite excessive, especially since the above will work 99% of the time.

take him to the doctor..sometimes bacteria accumulates..it could be anything..maybe he was itching himself and irritated more..call your Dr.

Gently retract the foreskin as far as possible, wash gently with a mild soap and apply an ointment like Neosporin. Later, the foreskin will be completely retractable.
Try something like A & D for a day or two. If that doesn’t make it better, take him to his pediatrician for some antibiotics.
